The Tours

All guided walking tours, with the exception of Overleigh Cemetery Tour, will start outside of Chester Visitor Information Centre on the Town Hall square (unless previously arranged).


Heart of Chester walking tour

The Heart of Chester Walking Tour - regular tour

  • This tour takes approximately 90 minutes. 
  • Public tour every Tuesday and Friday until September 2024 at 1pm.
  • Departs from Chester Visitor Information Centre, CH12HJ. Guided by Caroline or Phil.
  • The above tour can be booked in advance or on the day at Chester Visitor Information Centre 01244 405340. Also bookable through Viator/ Trip Advisor.
  • Tickets for the above tour are £12 per person.
  • Note there are steps involved (contact me if you require an accessible tour).

  • Chester is renowned for its picturesque streets and its incredible architecture with many tourists from all over the world coming here to admire its uniqueness. However Chester is also a city that has tales of romance and tragedy, love stories that are humorous and some that are spicy!

  • Book this walking tour, taking approximately 90 mins.
  • Note there are steps involved (contact me if you require an accessible tour).
  • Departing from outside of Chester Visitor Information Centre on the Town Hall square, unless a different start point agreed.
  • Imagine a scene and a place and tread with me in the location of their stories. 
  • From the lives of everyday folk and their medieval houses, to the homes of the landed gentry with townhouses and mansions to impress.
  • Experience Chester as a major trading hub, a Roman fortress and a base for an army.

Walk the Walls Tour (In just two hours!)

  • Book this two mile paved walking tour, taking approximately two hours to do the whole circuit.
  • Note there are steps involved (contact me if you require an accessible tour).
  • Departing from outside of Chester Visitor Information Centre on the Town Hall square, unless a different start point agreed.
  • Explore the walls of the city, originally proud ramparts for defence, they kept enemies at bay, later becoming a grand promenade.
  • Cross city gates past canals and medieval towers.
  • Stop by a Victorian infirmary and a school where once stood a jail. 
  • Pass by Chester’s racecourse once a busy port, to Chester Castle and along the River Dee.
  • Cast your mind back 2000 years on seeing Roman remains.
  • Admire Chester's famous Eastgate clock and imagine life in the abbey - now a cathedral. 
  • Hear about the lives of Romans, Saxons, Normans, and more.

Overleigh Cemetery Tour - a Victorian Cemetery

  • This tour takes approximately 90 minutes. 
  • Public tour every Friday, April to end September.          
  • Tickets for the above tour are £10 per person.
  • Departs 4:00pm from the cemetery gate, Overleigh Road, CH47HW. Guided by Caroline or Paul.
  • The above tour can be booked in advance or on the day at Chester Visitor Information Centre 01244 405340.

  • On this tour you will discover the extraordinary stories of those laid to rest here, including Mary Jonas who had 33 children! Edward Langtry the husband of Edward VII's mistress, who died in the Chester asylum, William Bidulph Cross, who made his coffin from thousands of matchboxes. Amazing stories in stone.

Blue Plaque walking tour

Historic Plaques Tour (or at least some of them!)

  • Book this private tour which is approximately two hours duration, leaving from outside of Chester Visitor Information Centre, CH12HJ.
  • Chester has lots of commemorative plaques for people and places on many buildings in the city centre. These plaques celebrate Chester’s rich history, and link the location to an event, a famous person or a special place of interest.
  • This tour uses the plaques as a springboard to interest and engage as you stroll around the city. From the Porta Principalis to the Freemen of the city. King Charles l’s visit to Gammul House and a visit by the Duke of Wellington.
  • A mayor, an illustrator, an architect and an important English physician. 
  • At least 20 places with plaques, miscellaneous signs and even a cameo with its associated story will be visited.
